TEXAS CHICANO ACTIVIST NEWSPAPER. [Mexican-Americans] El Mestizo. El Paso, Texas: Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Azlán; later Vamonos Recio Publications. 1974-1977.

EL MESTIZO. El Paso, Tejas Aztlan. Campus-based student newspaper, published at the University of Texas at El Paso between 1973 and 1976. In translation “THE MESTIZO” was named after the mixed ancestry of some Mexican people. The concept of Mestizaje was used by the Mexican government since the 1920s as a part of a campaign to support a national Mexican identity.

Within these seven issues there is coverage of local Chicano activism, police brutality, agricultural labor actions, and more. Headlines include CITY DESTROYS CHICANO COMMUNITY; BOMBINGS IN COLORADO KILL SIX CHICANOS; CRUSADE FOR JUSTICE RALLY; UNITY A MUST FOR U.F.W. VICTORY and THE FIGHT FOR THE CHICANO NATION CHILILI DEFENDS RIGHT TO THE LAND

D. Vol. II, No. 2. January 1975. 37 cm. 8 pp. Folded, else very good. Dias de la Raza; “Ilegales son Carnales;” UFW, etc.

E. Vol. II, No. 4. Sept. 1975. 37 cm. 8 pp. Folded, else very good. “Chicanos Unidoa Indicted;” forced sterilization; UFW, etc.

F. Vol. III, No. 3. May 1976. 43 cm. 8 pp. Folded, else very good. Police killing of Fernando Campos; Texas Farm Workers, etc.

OCLC shows three holdings of at least some of the issues (UC-Berkeley; Michigan St. Univ. & UT-Rio Grande Valley). Originally a publication of Chicano students at the University of Texas at El Paso, the early issues are very scarce.
