Societe De Colonisation Du Lac Temiskaming Sous Le Haut Patronage De Nos Seigneurs Les Eveques D'Ottawa Et De Pontiac.... 1885
Gendreau, Edmond. SOCIETE DE COLONISATION DU LAC TEMISKAMING SOUS LE HAUT PATRONAGE DE NOS SEIGNEURS LES EVEQUES D'QTTAWA ET DE PONTIAC.... Ottawa: Publie par le Ministere de L'Agriculture du Canada. 1885. 31 91) pgs, 2 lg folding color maps by Mortimer of Ottawa, showing proposed Railway Company lines for the Lake Temiscamingue Railway Comopany, available lots, and siting of Catholic Missions. This is the first edition of this rare prospectus for a real estate development project along lake Temiscamingue in the 1880s. A Catholic brother named Joseph Moffet had begun a project at Ville-Marie with a few settlers, and was able to contract Father Gendreau (1840-1918) to found the Colonization Society of Temiscamingue in the Bishopric of Ottawa. Gendreau organized land and water connections, obtained the license and backing to create the Lake Temiscamingue Railway Company, and by 1888 had created a very successful colony. This work details the project's growth, the new incoming settlers, the development prospects, and more. The area eventually became an importatn stopover on the railroad to Mattawa, and eventually became a center of paper mills by the early 20th century built by the Riordon Pulp and Paper Company. See: Gendreau, Edmond, Dictionary of Canadian Biography, Vol. XIV (1911-1920); Colonisation du lac Temiscamingue et du Lac Kippewa (1888). Original front printed yellow softcover, spine and rear cover renewed, soiling to gutter margins, minor edgewear, overall a nice copy.
