Dear Sir Yours of the 10th instant reached me this morning, and the contents noted. I think it would be the height of imprudence for you to go to Florida this year with your Negroes, as the Seminole Indians have overrun and laid waste to a good portion of it, and are still in their mad career of destruction. It will be some time before they can be put down. The destruction of so many plantations will cause a great scarcity of provisions, as well as individual pecuniary distress and suffering. I have received 22 bags of your cotton by boat and have put them with the other 25 received the trip before. Our market range is 14 to 15 1/2 – yours I think would bring 15 3/4 today. There is no regular steam navigation between Charleston and Florida – and you might have to wait eight or 10 days, before you could get a vessel going direct to Augustine. You will no doubt see by the papers the situation of Florida at present. Yours truly /S/ M. C. Dake
A rare primary source on cotton plantations, slavery and conditions in Florida. Expected wear, overall in vg cond.
