ACCOUNT BOOK BELONGING TO LEMUEL MARDEN OF NEW BOSTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE. 1789-1817. He married Hannah Greenough on Feb. 4, 1770 and they had 6 sons and 3 daughters.
A stone mason by profession, Lemuel also served 7 days as a private in Captain Nathaniel Gage's Company of Minute Men which marched on alarm April 19, 1775 and 5 days in Captain Savory's Detachment from November 30 to December 4, 1775. He assisted in the construction of the State House at Boston, MA.
Several Excerpts
1. Ada Sargent - 1789 – April to Building Chimney two Smokes and flue oven – 1-6-0
2. Daniel Smith – December 1789,
One Day work at laying Bricks 0-3-0
one Days and evening – 0-4-0
Half Day & Evening – 0-3-0
(Just as an aside..with all of the work ledgers we have handled over the last 37 years I do not believe I have ever seen the word evening as part of the entry.)
3. Jonathan Gore Esq. – April 1791
To one Day Mending Chimney 0-4-0
4. Jonathan Lynch – January 1792
To one Hundred Bushels of coal – 1-4-0
It is fascinating that beginning with a September 1805 entry all of the cost are now in dollars instead of lbs sterling.
There are numerous entries showing that Lemuel Marden was also a farmer and quite active in the lumbering business.
Several pages in the rear are missing 1/2 of the page. In total there are 40 pgs. (6 1/2 x 8 inches). Very readable in as expected used but vg cond.
