ACCOUNT BOOK OF LEWIS FLANDERS OF LOUDON, NEW HAMPSHIRE 1815-1825

LEWIS FLANDERS LEDGER – 1816. 354 full manuscript pages with the 1st entry being July 22, 1815 and the last entries being in 1825, depending upon the client. Each page is divided in half vertically with the services rendered by Flanders on the left and the Contra on the right. Flanders operated a carding, flannel, cloth and dying mill. The Contra states credits for labor, cider, bushels of wheat, hoes, etc.
While researching the ledger I found a listing of the 21 most important people and families that lived in Loudon in 1815. Of that listing, Flanders had as clients 15 individuals from those families. The ledger is quite comprehensive and extensive. Flanders pulled clients from neighboring towns of Gilmanton Center, Chichester and Canterbury. His clients even included several widows such as Widow Dolly Willie (b. 1795 – d. March 20, 1862); Widow Judith Sargent; Widow Mary Huntoon and Widow Mary Carter. Nathaniel Martin, Esq. came to town in 1808 and became quite involved with town business. Other important families who were clients were the Osgoods; Bachelder; the Clough families and John and Stephen Cate.
Early 19th century carding ledgers are quite scarce as this being the 1st we have had the opportunity to purchase.
Covers worn and leather separated from cardboard cover. Interior quite legible and in vg cond.
