CALIFORNIA GOLDEN CREAM LAGER

CALIFORNIA GOLDEN CREAM LAGER

(California - Brewery) Fisk, F.F. A single page letter on Hotel St. Maxon letterhead dated Aug. 24 - 15 and addressed to El Dorado Brewing Co. - Stockton

In full it reads;

The City Council of Tulare called a special meeting of councilmen and City trustees last night to talk over and vote on the sale of our Golden Cream Lager. I gave them a half hours talk which resulted in a vote of 2 to 1 in our favor. Tulare will make a fine Golden ream town, I believe better than Visalia." Very Truly, F.F. Fiske.

Founded in the 1850’s, Stockton’s El Dorado Brewery was in business for around 100 years before closing in 1955. The 1915 date of the letter is several years before the 18th Amendment went into effect. The prohibition and anti-saloon movements and the potential of the United States entering into WW I had a major impact on breweries in America. In 1911, California became a local option state, meaning communities could vote either wet or dry. Apparently, Tulare was still a “wet” town in 1915. Although many of the El Dorado Brewing Company’s pre-prohibition lagers are recorded on several online sites, “Golden Cream Lager” does not appear among them." (Mason)
