PETER WHITE BIOGRAPHY PETER WHITE. A typescript containing a biography of Peter White (1830-1908), an American politician, businessman, banker, real estate developer and philanthropist. As a politician, White held several positions at the local and state level including country clerk, postmaster, school board member and a Michigan state representative and senator. White was one of the first settlers in Marquette, Michigan. He was involved in several iron-mining businesses in or near Marquette. Written by an unnamed author the biography moves chronologically through White's life. "Mr. White is comparatively a young man, He that reads this sketch will see that he has been a great benefit to the city and county. Coming here as a boy, he has taken part in almost everything that pushed Marquette forward. In the construction of its Water Works, Sewers, Gas Plant, Library, Powder Mill, Park and Opera House, he has been the leader and in most cases the inaugurator of each. These are the prominent matters, but in small affairs he has led as well, and there is many a poor man who owes his all to his generosity. As a leader of the church both at home and abroad, he has incurred the good wishes of thousands. He has done much, but he will live to do more. To sum up the honors that he has received: he was five years Receiver of the united States Land Office; Eight years County Clerk and Register of Deeds; Deputy Collector of the Port of Marquette six years; Postmaster ten years; Assessor and Treasurer of the union school forty-six years; Originator, Cashier and President of the National Bank since 1864; Representative from Marquette and Chippewa Counties in 1857, Senator in 1875." "He has been in all kinds of business, and has always been a leading man in the Upper Peninsula. He was a member of the World's Fair Managers for Michigan in 1893, and was appointed a member of the Mackinaw Island State Park Commission in 1895." Plain full leather covered wraps.
