NEW BERN, NORTH CAROLINA LETTER - MARCH 14, 1862. Letter written by Leonard J. Clifton to his father dated June 7, 1852. Leonard was a member of the 51st Pennsylvania Volunteers who participated in the capture of New Bern on March 14, 1862 under the leadership of General Ambrose Burnside. The Confederate forces, 4000 soldiers were under the command of Brigadier General Lawrence O. B. Branch. Their defense line was brokent throuogh by Burnside's ecruits and the Unikon won not only the battle, but the ability to hold New Bern until the end of the war.
