The Sherman Institute, founded in 1892, was the first off-reservation school in California. The photos give a visual overlook of the school including a center Panaramic View Sherman Institute. Other photos include those of students, faculty, students in class and working in the fields, exterior pictures of the buildings, etc. There is also a listing of the SHERMAN ACADEMIC GRADUATES for the years of 1904, 1905, 1906, 1907 and 1908. In the Sherman Institute’s effort to attract students it states “Sherman...offers the Indian boy and girl that educational plan she aims to make well-rounded, cultured, independent, self-supporting citizens...Indian pupils desiring to enter Sherman may make application to the Agent or Supertendent on their reservation.” OCLC records eight institutions as holding the promotional.
