The book contains thirty-two paintings of native peoples of the southwest including the Cochiti, Laguna, Acoma, Santa Clara, Navaho, Taos, Hopi, Apache, Pima and Supai. The left side page (versos) contains various brief vignettes about their history, beliefs, crafts, arts, ceremonies, etc. with the right-side page (rectos) offering a full-color depiction of same. Published by and for the marketing genius of the Fred Harvey company, who in 1876 became the concessionaire for the Santa Fe Railroad. Harvey operated 84 Harvey House restaurants along the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad.
