“In the nineteenth century the greatest mineral deposits ever known in the world were discovered in Nevada. It was the wonderful Comstock lode that was found and it was then that Virginia City was built up.
In the twentieth century, Nevada has again been the scene of great mining excitement and wonderful discoveries of gold, silver and other minerals. But this new era of mining activity in Nevada is not confined to any one camp, district or county. Remarkable discoveries have been made north, south east and west and some of the camps are separated by distances of hundreds of miles.” (From: handbook of Nevada Mines)
Today Nevada as a whole accounts for roughly 75% of all annual gold production in the United States, with the vast majority being found in the Carlin Trend (1961) which ranges from 40 miles long by 5 miles wide in northeastern Nevada.
