Johnson, Irving. MY BLACK HILLS TRIP. 123 sepia toned or black and white. Captions in white ink. C. 1920’s trip through South Dakota and Wyoming.

An interesting depression era trip through the Black Hills and South Dakota in the 1920’s. As our compiler Irving Johnson travels, he photographs and identifies the prairies around Slim Buttes with scenes along the Missouri River. From there he goes on to Rapid Canyon, Spearfish Canyon and Bridal Veil Falls before reaching an unidentified town where he witnesses “Indian Chiefs” and “Indians” in a Native American parade. From here it is on to Wonderland Cave and Sylvan Lake where there are photos of a very successful fishing trip. They see the Custer Memorial, drive up Pigtail Bridge and visit the Gordon stockade and Fall River as well as Needles.

At this point in the album the photos are of the larger size and include sights such as Orman Dam, Devil’s Tower, elevated views from Slim Buttes, the “Gold Mining Town of Lead”, a Native American parade in Deadwood where on photo is identified as “Yip! Yip! The Indians are Coming!”, an exhibition of a “Fight Between Indians and the Famous Black Horse Cavalry,” “Indian Camp”, a horseback trip up the Buzzard’s Roost Trail, a heard of buffalo at Wind Cave National Park and Cuny Table, Chapel of the Wilds and Cedar Pass in the Bad Lands, etc.

A really wonderful depression era photo of the west with numerous highlights.

Photo album chipped on pages as expected, string tied and overall in vg cond.
