1735 WETHERSFIELD CONNECTICUT LAND TRANSFER
1735 WETHERSFIELD CONNECTICUT LAND TRANSFER concerning Martin Kellogg Jr. (1686-1753). Born in Deerfield, MA a son of Martin Kellogg (1658-1732) and Anna Hinsdale (1656-1689). In 1704 Martin and others were captured by the Native Americans during a raid on Deerfield and taken to Canada. Others captured on this raid were his father, brother Joseph and sisters, Johanna and Rebecca.
In 1708 Martin was “again captured while on a scout about 100 miles up the river; he remained several yrs. Among the Fr. And Indians and learned the language of both; on his ret. He was employed by the government as interpreter, and in that capacity accompanied Stoddard and Williams as commissioners to recover captives fr. Can. In 1714, and proved a very useful assistant; in 1748, 12 Indian boys of the Hollis school were put into his care and were in his house at Newington, Ct., three yrs.; at the time of his death ‘he was employed by Mr. Isaac Hollis to support and educate at his charge 24 Indian boys.”
In 1716 Martin married Dorothy Chester (1692-1754) in Hartford County, CT. While living in Wethersfield he worked as a weaver and later became the colony’s agent to supply the Mohawk with clothing.
Excerpts from the manuscript: “Know all men by these present, that I Martin Kellogg of Wethersvield in Hartford County in the Colony of Connecticut in New England...Lottunto James Cole and Moses Cole both of Glastonbury...for the consideration of one hundred sixty pounds money...in hand now paid or accepted as paid by the Cole’s….sometime belonging to Stephen or Stephen John Chester of Wethersfield...bounded north on land of Captain Thomas Wells.”
Brothers James Cole (1700-1760) and Moses Cole (1707-1753) of Glastonbury were sons of John Cole (1670-1746) and Mary Rogers (1675-1732). James Cole married Mary Snow (1707-1760) and in 1735 he was residing in Glastonbury. John Cole was a son of John Cole and Ruth Snow. Mary Rogers was a doaugher of James Rogers (1648-1678) and Mary Paine (c. 1655- c. 1705). James Rogers was a son of Joseph Rogers (1603-1678) who was a Mayflower passenger along with his father Thomas Rogers (c.1571-1621) mother Alice Cosford Rogers (b. 1597) and other children were evidently left behind as there are no records that imply her arrival in New England.
Stephen John Chester of Wethersfield (1698-1725) brother of Dorothy Chester Kellogg (1692-1754) who was the wife of martin Kellogg. He was born in Wethersfield, a son of Stephen Chester (1660-1698) and Jemina Treat who married in 1691. Stephen Chester was a son of Capt. John Chester (1635-1697) and Sarah Welles (1643-1698) daughter of Gov, Thomas Welles.
The document has not been examine out of the frame. Framed measures 16 x 20 inches with the deed approximately 8 x 12 inches. A Special plaque “Land Transfer 1735” at bottom of document. It does have some minor lose, but overall in vg cond.
