VERY UNUSUAL CAR EXPENSE BOOK BELONGING TO R.H. SWAN, 12 RIDGE STREET, GLENS FALLS, N.Y.

Early twentieth-century personal record book kept by R.H. Swan of Glen Falls, New York on expenses for his automobiles starting with a Buick Model 10 he purchased in 1910 which he later exchanged in 1914 for a 1914 Buick for $350.00. He kept a detailed record of all his expenses from purchasing his license (May 14) and every trip with record of gas consumption and costs, miles traveled and every repair and maintenance expense he incurred. The last car he purchased was a Chandler Six de Luxe sedan in 1927 for $1,295.00 (New Car Order Blank enclosed for this vehicle).

Expense diary begins:

Took possession of 1910 Buick, Model 10. Car formerly owned by John Sheldon, Cambridge, N,Y. And was exchanged with Miller Bros., Glens Falls, N.Y. for a 1914 Buick. I purchased car from Miller Bros ($350.00) May 15, 1914.

5/15/14 Cyc. Reads (1914) about 300 Mi.

May 14 – License - $5.00

May 15 – Tickets for 100 gal. Gas. - 14.00

May 17 – Rubber hose for water pump - .35

May 21 – Auto permit on barn #119 Ridge - .30

May 25 – Putz Pomade (Brass polish) - .10
